A Hood of Blood by kelogsloops A Hood of Blood by kelogsloops

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Okay, I have a thing for hair... and a thing for Red Riding Hood.... or fairy tales at least.
This was a watercolour painting I did earlier this year! I really love watercolour painting and reallllly fell in love with it when I studied art in high school last year! I don't know why, but I think its the kind of 'happy mistakes' and vulnerability to error, randomness and freedom which I find so awesome about watercolour paints. Because you can't really undo or erase mistakes, which is what I love, but also fear!

For this idea, I previously did a digital piece on a similar idea! I've always imagined fairy tales to be quite darker than they really were, and have fallen in love with that idea, so to me, Red Riding Hood's hood is of that colour because of a darker reason... rather, it's painted with the blood of the Wolf. That story has always played in my mind, and I've loved that idea of it, though it's partially sick, and twisted!

Hope you like it!

I love all of your art. It has a sense of pain, and joy at the same time. You create that with watercolor and I can't even control it to the point of one stroke. Watercolor is not for me. Alcohol ink works a lot better in my case. You are a master in your own right when it comes to the use of it. My hat off to you.

Dear kind madam,
thank you. It's words like yours and comments like these that have this mind blowing effect in being able to not only make my day, but to drive me to keep on doing what I get to do everyday, and continue loving it.

You articulated some of my thoughts about watercolor so effectively kelogsloops! I stopped by to ask you a question about your technique used in this pretty piece: how did you create a thin border of white space around some of the red areas?

Also, did you cure/treat your paper before working? After dealing with the perils of trying to scan warped peices of paper, I tried to cure my paper before working on a piece, but I am still learning the best methods!

Thanks for your time! You may have earned another watcher ;)!

Aw, thank you so very much! It's truly so deeply moving to be able to receive such kind comments like these.

The white lining is created with a white gel pen that I use to finish off the detailing of my works. I've started to use white opaque ink nowadays though!

The paper used in this piece was not cured or stretched, as it was early on in my watercolour ventures before I knew much about stretching. The original is slightly warped, but not too much as the paper was relatively high gsm/lbs. I also tend to flatten my works after by placing heavy books over them , which does subside the warped paper a little more.

It was an absolute pleasure, and thank you once again :D

Thank you for your in-depth response! I must acquire a white gel pen for myself :), it creates such a pretty effect.

I got myself some 140lb paper, which helps some, but I bet even heavier paper would be better. I will have to try the heavy book method on my finished products. Thanks for sharing your methods with me!

Really nice painting this on! It reminds me of the manga "Ludwig kakumei" of Kaori Yuki. She twisted up a bunch of classical stories and one of those twists were to make little Red Riding Hood a punky and cold blooded asassin :)
